Dr Paul Sulzberger states that "However crazy it might sound, just listening to the language, even though you don't understand it, is critical...”.
On reading this sentence I was immediately reminded of my own experience. At the age of five I went to school for the first time in my life in Greenwich, England. In addition to the crying every morning at the school gate for not wanting to leave my mother, two and a half months later everyone considered that I wasn’t learning the language, because I still didn't utter a word in English. Three months later, and to everyone’s surprise, input turned to output! I was speaking English and with a British pronunciation.
Further on Dr. Sulzberger adds, "Neural tissue required to learn and understand a new language will develop automatically from simple exposure to the language—which is how babies learn their first language".
I hope you enjoy reading New study may revolutionize language learning by Paul Sulzberger, published on 27 January 2009. If our students aren’t exposed to English before they start learning it in school, we can definitely suggest that they be exposed to it in after school hours through TV, music and technology available to them.
A happy and productive school year!
Enjoy language learning and pronunciation!
