I was born and raised in the Lisbon area, in Portugal. I have a bilingual background. As a child I attended a British school in the morning and a Portuguese school in the afternoon. Then I studied in the United States for four years and came back to major in English.
I taught English for 33 years at different levels in public schools. The big change came in 1998 when I introduced technology in my classrooms. I started with e-mail exchanges, went on to blogging and then blended learning based on Web 2.0 tools. Edtech played a career-changing role. I started presenting about edtech at conferences at home and abroad. I began teacher training online and later face-to-face. And I became the proud recipient of two awards: the Edublog Award 2006 for Best Teacher Blog and the EU Schoolnet "e-Learning Awards 2007", Gold Prize in the category of "School of the Future", with a curricular blog. In the final years of my career I came up with a pronunciation strategy for my students that works amazingly well. It's based on everyday Portuguese sounds to represent English pronunciation. It's such an intuitive strategy, using familiar sounds to represent unfamiliar and often chaotic sounds, that it was an immediate success. This easy-to-learn method greatly improved my students' pronunciation. Years later with the encouragement of my Radical English friends, Pronunciation Made Easy for Portuguese-Speaking Learners of English came about. And I created this website to share it with you. |
Nasci e cresci na zona de Lisboa. Sou bilingue.
As tecnologias educativas mudaram a minha carreira. Made Easy for Portuguese-Speaking Learners of English. |
