- Can you remind us what a lisp is?
- The English language also has a lot of the ‘th’ sounds, doesn’t it?
- It’s a wonder that people can understand what each other are saying!
- Are you saying we needn’t bother teaching our learners the ‘th’ sounds, then?
- Why bother teaching any pronunciation at all? It sounds like anything goes!
It was the word “lisp” in the title that caught my attention to this article. However, I wasn’t familiar with the expression “reverse lisp”. And why did “lisp” catch my attention? Well, those of you familiar with my Pronunciation Made Easy dictionary know that I explain that the “th” sound in “think” is pronounced as the “s” in Portuguese by someone who lisps.
After reading Replacing ‘th’: The reverse lisp by Mark Hancock, World of Better Learning, 28 November 2017, I hope you’ll reflect on whether we need to teach pronunciation or not. Please leave your ideas and opinions in the Comments area.
Enjoy pronunciation!
